Also know as manual therapy. Our joints can stiffen up for a number of reasons. This treatment involves passive movement to a specific joint (peripheral or spinal) to reduce pain and improve movement
Demand on our bodies due to work, exercise and lifestyle can result in stress on soft tissues (muscle, ligament) as well as our joints. This can in itself result in pain and disability. Soft tissue mobilisation is a specific technique used to reduce pain caused by these problems. We use a combination of techniques such as myofascial trigger point release, cupping, specific soft tissue mobilisations and massage. We also assess muscle imbalances and make suggestions as to how you can improve the function of a muscle.
Acupuncture is a clinically proven method of treatment and is used in our clinic to treat musculoskeletal pain. Inserting and stimulating needles into specific points sends impulses along nerves to the spinal cord and brain setting up reflex patterns. It also causes the release of a number of hormones into the system. Firstly endorphins are released which are your own natural pain relievers and anti-inflammatory agents. Secondly serotonin levels increase, having a direct effect on mood and causing an increased sense of wellbeing.
Physiotherapists are excellent at identifying movement dysfunctions. Your physiotherapist will prescribe a specific strengthening exercise or stretch to aid in your recovery.
